Beehive Shelter Canopy Project Kirkland and Catterall CofE Primary School

Location:

Preston

Focus:

Community Support

Overview

Central Power Services recently supported Kirkland and Catterall CofE Primary School by designing and building a bespoke canopy to protect the school’s beehives. The project was led by Engineering Coordinator Ollie Lavery, whose son attends the school, turning a personal connection into a meaningful community initiative.

The Build

Working as a team, John Kieran, Dylan Tracy, Ollie Lavery and Paul Dove constructed a durable wooden shelter designed to withstand the elements while remaining accessible for staff and pupils.

The structure includes:

  • A solid timber frame for strength and stability
  • A pitched roof to provide effective weather protection
  • An open design for safe access and maintenance

The finished canopy provides a safe, practical and long-lasting solution for the school’s apiary

Supporting Biodiversity and Community

Bees are essential to biodiversity, playing a key role in pollination and supporting ecosystems. By protecting the school’s hives, this project helps maintain local bee populations while giving pupils hands-on experience with nature.

This initiative reflects Central Power Services’ commitment to:

  • Supporting environmental sustainability
  • Promoting biodiversity
  • Giving back to the local community

Outcome

The finished canopy provides a safe, practical and long-lasting solution for the school’s apiary. It not only protects the beehives but also creates an engaging outdoor learning space for future generations.

This project highlights how small, targeted initiatives can make a meaningful difference - combining engineering expertise with community impact.
